James Jake James

Based in Fingal Head, New South Wales, James Jake James is a contemporary artist whose paintings explore colour, symbolism, and narrative as symbiotic forms of expression. Inspired by nature, music, personal stories, and the humour hidden within life's highs and lows, his work balances playfulness with deeper reflection.

Working intuitively, he builds vibrant layers of colour, texture, and language, allowing each painting to evolve through curiosity, experimentation, and happy accidents. In his art, as in life, he embraces mistakes as opportunities for transformation; his practice celebrates the unpredictable nature of the creative process, allowing each work to grow organically.

Animals are a recurring presence throughout his paintings. Sometimes carrying symbolic meaning, sometimes simply as themselves. A rhino can be a metaphor, or just a rhino. His practice embraces this ambiguity, creating space for viewers to form their own connections and intentions.

James Jake James has presented multiple solo exhibitions in mainland Australia, as well as exhibitions in France, New York, London, Tasmania, and Indonesia. His work has also featured across art and music festivals purposefully weaving together visual art, sound, and storytelling into the saturation of experience so often evoked throughout his practice.
